fascinating is that we came across was, romney had a mormon documentarian follow him around in the campaign. he was a friend of one of the romney sons. he had great access. he made a documentary about from the -- romney. in 2010, he showed it to the family, they love it. the staff said, we are not going to show this to the republic -- to the public. they thought it showed too much of him talking about made a docm his mormon faith in a way that they feared could turn off the public, which has some misconceptions about that faith. to me, that captured the attention in the romney campaign. the staff never wanted to talk about the candidate. they wanted to make it about obama and his handling of the economy. ultimately, that a lot obama and his campaign to define mitt romney and his campaign. host: and yet, he did talk about his mormon faith at the convention. other members that spoke about mitt romney, but that only happened at the convention. it did not happen in 30-second spots. did not move much beyond that. guest: the obama campaign did not understand what they were up to. they did not ant
had expected. the gop's odds on favorite, mitt romney stumbled in some of the early contests. he refused to release his tax returns allowing newt gingrich to take south carolina. >> we proved here in south carolina that people of power beats big money. >> reporter: but that big money eventually cleared the field and romney set his sights on the president. >> it's still about the economy and we're not stupid. >> reporter: at number nine, bain. not that one. that one. almost as soon as romney had had locked up the nomination, his former private investment capital was crashed by the super pac and obama campaign. the attack ads put romney on defense for months. the president also got a lip fr lift from the supreme court. romney vowed to strike it down himself. >> i'm not one that's going to get rid of obama care. >> reporter: at number seven, gas. >> governor romney, do you feel that your gas has overshadowed your foreign trips? >> reporter: or in romney's case, his entire foreign trip where a campaign aide lashed out at reporters. a gaffe that went global. and then at number sick, t
eventually cleared the field and romney set his sights on the president. >> it's still about the economy. and we're not stupid. >> reporter: at number nine, bang. >> your punishment must be more severe. >> reporter: not that one, that one. almost as soon as mitt romney locked up the nomination, bane capital was savaged by democratic superpacs and the obama campaign. >> like a vampire. sucking the life out of us. >> reporter: the attack ads put romney on defense for months. >> there's nothing wrong with being associated with bane capital for months. >> reporter: the president also got a lift from the supreme court which at number eight upheld his embattled health care law, so romney vowed to strike it down himself. >> i'm that one that's going to get rid of obama care. >> reporter: number seven, gas. >> governor romney, do you feel your gaffes have overshadowed your trip? >> reporter: his missteps often dominated the news cycle. >> the private sector is doing fine. >> reporter: or in romney's campaign, his entire foreign trip. ub at six, the conventions were remembered less for the nomine
a month of each other, the first would be a low, that first debate, a lot of folks thought mitt romney was tipping the scales after that night in denver. >> well, astonishing, several things were going on there, i don't think president obama likes these debates. i don't think he really respected governor romney at that point, probably thought he might have been a bit of a lightweight, also a feeling president obama wanted to feel presidential and above it all and all those things combined for a horrific performance, even his aides would admit that and he would admit that at this point. it put romney back in the race when many of us thought he might be a goner. >> just a few short weeks later hurricane sandy hit and president obama had an opportunity to appear with new jersey governor chris christie, sort of certifying a bipartisan image before the election which a lot of people thought tipped the scales back to him. >> certainly a break for the election, sandy hit the northeast. it's always good for presidents to appear presidential, to appear to be doing things. to have that happen a
-- mormon, as far as romney, it does not influence. but to judge in the fruits of the politicians we are voting on, that is what we should look at. i would say, yes, religion guides my life, so it will guide my choices. i judge of the fruits of those politicians. like the one gentleman earlier was saying about people who are only worried about the rich. that is not in the bible. thanks, greta, and thanks for c- span. host: republican caller. mississippi. caller: i am a religious person and i have been my whole life. when of the greatest people i watch on television is david jeremiah. but my religion has always taught me that we have to take care of each other. i am a retired firefighter. i say that after jesus christ, firefighters love you the most because they are willing to sacrifice your life. but in this world, we have succumbed to the love of money, which is the root of all evil. rather than listen to answers that i think are given to us, we love money so much that we turn to try and keep all that we can for ourselves. we talk about the fiscal cliff. the fiscal cliff as far as i
romney lost the election, there would be civil war within the republican party. this is what we are seeing now. what was so weird about the last episode is this caucus was in a room which was virtually like fantasyland. they were arguing over a proposal that made no sense and that was going nowhere. it had -- they are like tearing each other apart over it. this is a party that not only i love your line where you said they weren't able to achieve partisanship. this is a party that is no longer capable of governing. >> right. >> you can't let them be part of the process if they are going to behave like that. >> that's the point. if they can't pass a bill that exempted $999,999 of increases, what can they do? >> i think it saved obama from himself. the deal he was offering to bear, to raise taxes on people making $400,000 was a really bad one, right? now we get to come back to a new congress. you know, what he needs to find is get the house democratic caucus in line and pick up 20 republican votes in the house. 17 republican votes in the house. that's the coalition that is going to
romney was talking about last year with the 47%. if the tax rates increase you all of a sudden have more people paying income taxes and you just have a broader, higher rate to play with. next year when they come back they can get rid of some of the duck -ts and what not and lower the rates and overall have a lot more money in the system to play with, a lot more options. they think they are better shape for tax reform if they come back next year with the rates having gone up. >> reporter: and by not allowing the president to just add nah see um raise the debt level, they have leverage, don't they? >> they believe so. and the president -- it's safe to say the president realizes that, because he's been insistent throughout that he won't deal with another debt level gamesmanship as he calls it from the last time around. he understands that republicans set a precedent last time when they said every one of these debt level increases has to be matched with real action, spending cuts and other ways to reduce the deficit, that is exactly the fight we are fashion. he doesn't want to have that. rep
is is it all necessary or necessary to be done that way. >> mitt romney kept saying this country could be on the road to be more like greece if we did not get our arms around it. the unemployment rate remains high. are you optimistic in the short term about our country's future. >> it is hard to be. i tried to be. if we can get this resolved, this fiscal cliff situation, and have a pathway to seeing the deficit be reduced, cannot do it overnight, if we can see there is a path, a trajectory of slowing down the growth of spending to the point you can see the deficit will ultimately go away over a reasonable time, people will start investing again, hiring again, and i spoke to a business group yesterday and asked if they would hire just because they get a tax credit for hiring people. they said no. if you see the deficit will go away and there is hope we are on the right path to fiscal sanity, will you then hired? yes. we will have markets for our products and services and then we will need more people. we are stuck right now because all we have done for a year and a half was kick the can
